THE SOVEREIGN DROP 039 — On the Old Build

Not a newsletter, but a ritual. One drop each week. Distilled wisdom for the whole man.

Field Note: On the Old Build

For years I kept a version of myself alive for other people.

She was easier to explain. She wanted things she was supposed to want, and everyone around me had already learned her shape by heart. When I started to change, I felt the pull to keep performing her — to stay recognizable, to spare the people who'd fallen for the old build. Essentially, I became the caretaker of a woman I was trying to leave.

You know this, even if you'd describe it differently.

There is a version of you that other people are still in love with. Your father knows him. Your oldest friend toasts him. The woman across the table married him. You've moved, but he hasn't. You keep him breathing on everyone's behalf, because changing too much feels like a betrayal of the people who showed up for who you used to be. (Worth reading that last sentence again - especially if you consider yourself a loyal person.)

No one is forcing this. You and I taught them exactly who to expect, and we've been terrified to make updates.

Growth doesn't stall because you can't move. It stalls because you've decided other people’s caricatures of you and their comfort in them are worth more than your evolution and growth.

They aren’t.

Question

Whose image of you are you protecting at the cost of who you're becoming?

Integration

Who is one person who relates to the old version of you? Note one true thing that doesn't fit their picture of you.

Benediction

You don’t owe anyone your smaller self.

I believe in what you are becoming.
