THE SOVEREIGN DROP 045 — On The Fears Underneath Your Core Needs
Not a newsletter, but a ritual. One drop each week. Distilled wisdom for the whole man.
Field Note: On Your Two Core Needs
Back to our core needs. From last week - which ones are your front runners? (And if you’re like several who emailed me after the last Drop...who needs to pick two when you can have them all!)
CORE SOCIAL NEEDS:
Significance
Acceptance
Approval
Intelligence
Pity
Power
This week I’m going to the under belly of these six social needs to share the root fears of each and what it could look like when these needs are triggered.
You may not act out the common things when “triggered” because you’ve matured. However, in the midst of maturing, we often learn to manipulate the world around us so that we aren’t caught off guard with things that trigger us. Look for the work of the week below in the question and integration.
TRIGGERS AND FEARS:
Significance
Fear - being overlooked, ordinary, irrelevant, or unappreciated
When Triggered - this person may brag harder, defend credentials, become competitive, or withdraw to protect their ego
Acceptance
Fear - being excluded, rejected by the group, socially isolated
When Triggered - this person may conform harder, over-align, withdraw quietly, or become anxious about social standing
Approval
Fear - criticism, rejection, being disliked
When Triggered - this person may over-explain, apologize excessively, and people-please
Intelligence
Fear - looking ignorant, incompetent, uninformed, foolish
When Triggered - this person may over-explain, debate aggressively, cite sources, and double down on logic
Pity
Fear - being dismissed, having pain minimized, emotional invisibility
When Triggered - this person may amplify hardship, repeat stories, become more emotional
Power
Fear - being dominated, challenged publicly, losing status
When Triggered - this person may escalate their tone, become firmer, and assert dominance
Question
Where have you skillfully learned to work the world around you so you aren’t caught off guard with your triggers and fears?
Integration
This week, I want you to catch one of your skillful defenses in action.
You’ve spent years engineering your world so the triggers rarely land. Curating who you’re around, steering conversations, avoiding rooms and people and moments that touch the fear underneath your core needs. It’s maturity and management.
It’s also a very sophisticated cage!
What have you so carefully arranged so you never have to feel that fear? Walk into that situation and notice yourself in it. That’s it. The integration is just NOTICING.
Benediction
Maturity that hides your fear isn’t mastery. It’s a better disguise.
The strongest men aren’t the ones who have arranged a life where nothing touches them. They’re the ones who can be touched and not flinch.
I believe in what you are becoming.
