Field Note: On The Art of Deflection
Almost 100% of the time when I ask a man how he’s feeling, he gives me an anecdote on what’s going on, or offers a more a more poetic intellectualization of life’s happenings. (You’re laughing. You’ve done it 100 times.)
Your gut instinct is to deflect any question about how you really are.
One of your deepest desires is to be seen and known, yet when someone invites you to be seen and known, you post your guard and reject the opportunity.
The truth of the matter is that YOU don’t actually know how you are.
The next time you’re asked “how are you?”, take it as a prompt to do a quick emotion scan to see how you’re really feeling. From there, you can decide whether you’ll give your normative answer, or share what’s really going on. At least this way YOU will know how you’re feeling.
Turns out, knowing yourself is the first step to allowing others to truly know you too.
I believe in what you are becoming.
